Gareth Ironbranch, or Gareth Sand, is the son of Arturo Sand, and grandson of Ormond Yronwood. His estranged uncle is Lord Anders Yronwood.
Appearance and Character[]
Like his father Arturo Sand, Gareth Ironbranch is an attractive man. His handsome, masculine features are enhanced by his deep blue, almost purple eyes that he inherited from his Lysene mother. A well-groomed beard accentuates his rugged good looks. In addition to his physical qualities Gareth has a personality to match. He is kind with a disarming smile and a charming personality that has wooed many a lady and earned the comradey of many men. There is one thing that causes Gareth to deviate from his good nature and that thing is House Yronwood. The treatment he and his parents have received by Lord Anders has earned the contempt of Gareth and he will do anything to see them ruined.
History[]
Gareth was born in Qohor, Essos in 298 AC. His parents were Arturo Sand, bastard of Lord Ormond Yronwood and Lina, a Lysene noble who’d been sold into slavery by her destitute father. Gareth has no memory of Essos as his family returned to Dorne shortly after he and Lina were able to travel. Upon returning to Dorne Arturo took up service to House Wyl. He served as a second to the Boneway Knight and quickly earned a reputation as a skilled and reliable warrior. At some point Arturo went to Castle Yronwood in an attempt to reconcile with his half-brother Anders only to be harshly rebuked. Both Arturo and Gareth’s lives were implicitly threatened if they were ever to return to Yronwood lands.
Shortly after this meeting between half-brothers the Shattering occurred. Ser Arturo left to fight for Dorne and later acted as the sworn shield to Lady Tania Cloverwood nee Wyl. Gareth would eventually discover his father died at the Massacre of Northmarch. The Lady of Wyl took pity on Lina and Gareth and made Lina one of her handmaidens. As Gareth grew he formed close bonds with many of the Wyl children. While he didn’t take to sword play and horse riding he did take to the bow a
nd politics of court. Through childhood and into adulthood Lina continuously spoke ill of the Yronwoods and their treatment of Arturo. When Quentyn’s War occurred it was an easy decision for Gareth to fight against the rebels.
With Quentyn and the Yronwoods defeated Gareth petitioned Arianne Martell to have the Yronwood lands given to him, a loyal servant. He request was “politely” declined as he had little support from other lords. This didn’t diminish his desire to rule Yronwood. In the four years since he has quietly been building support among lords to favor him as heir to Yronwood should the Bloodroyals ever rebel again.
